Holden's Finance Committee made its public case for a $5.5 million property tax override ahead of the May 11 vote. Chairman Paul Challenger, joined by members Donna Wallace and Jane Titcombe, said the override would add $753 a year to the average $554,000 home's tax bill and push the rate to $15.27. Without it, the committee's "austerity budget" cuts library hours from 54 to 32 a week, drops the senior center to half time, and eliminates three police officers, a net three firefighters and three DPW positions.

The budget already draws $1.9 million from a $3.5 million savings balance, leaving $1.6 million for next year. "An override is not raising taxes. An override is raising the ability to raise taxes," Challenger said.

One resident told the panel, "I don't have a choice. I have to vote for this."
